Sperm Freezing

It is the process of freezing a semen sample taken from a male patient naturally or surgically to be used later in in-vitro fertilisation treatment.

• Patients with testicular cancer
• Before chemotherapy for patients who will receive chemotherapy due to cancer treatment
• Before treatment for patients who will undergo surgery or medication that will impair sperm production
• People with poor sperm count, motility or morphology (shape) or at risk of deterioration due to a disease (such as varicocele)
• People with ejaculation problems due to various reasons
• To prepare sperm in advance for patients who will not be able to be at the centre during their IVF treatment

Before sperm collection, a 2-5 day sexual abstinence is recommended. If the sperm count is sufficient and the patient can provide a sample, the sample is taken by masturbation in the unit. If the sperm count is very low or the patient cannot provide a sample, the sperm sample is taken under anaesthesia with minor surgical intervention.

After the sperm is collected, it is first analysed in the embryology laboratory and preparations are made to select the healthiest sperm. After the sperm analysis, the sperm sample is frozen at -196 degrees with a particular sperm-freezing liquid and stored in a special freezing tank under the name of the patient.

In the sperm freezing process, the sperm sample is frozen at very low temperatures. This way, the sample can be stored for many years without damage. The sperm is kept in a special place in the sperm freezing tank in advanced embryology laboratories and is reserved for the patient. This sample can only be used with the patient's permission and approval.

Sperm can be stored frozen without being damaged as long as the male patient is alive and mentally stable and wishes to continue its annual storage with the patient's consent. While sperm can only be stored for a certain time in many countries, in our centre, sperm can be stored for as long as desired without any time constraints.
